In Archeofoss 2020, Joseph Lewis showed the potential of open source “R package leastcostpath analysis” to answer archaeological questions in GIS systems (abstract in https://zenodo.org/record/4002961#.YHgzlOgzaUk).
Until now, little has been done to make Open-source Software solutions easily accessible to non-expert users. The author developed a tool called “package leastcostpath” to calculate Least Cost Paths and their derivates, as well as providing functionality to calculate slope-based cost surface that incorporate cost functions such as the Tobler’s Hiking Function.
This tool is very flexible and allows users to easily change parameters. At the same time, it permits the incorporation of other cost surfaces such as the attraction of features in the landscape, movement barriers and potential movement within the landscape.
