Politecnico di Milano, in conjunction with Università degli Studi Firenze (UNIFI) and Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), is organizing the 2nd International Conference GEORES 2019 on “Cultural Heritage: challenges, new perspectives and technology innovation Towards informative content models and beyond” (ISPRS and ICOMOS CIPA event).
The GEORES 2019 conference aims to be an occasion to bring together the communities of Geomatics and Restoration, sharing potentials and critical aspects tackling with the digitization of Cultural Heritage, where technologies meet preservation policies and real needs, filling the gap among technology innovation and ‘contents’ requirement in view of the preservation, valorisation, management, training and dissemination of Cultural Heritage, by addressing informative content models and eXtended Reality.
The GEORES 2019 conference is an occasion for the experts of the two worlds of Geomatics and Restoration acting in the Cultural Heritage domain field to be intended in an extended meaning, ranging from architectural heritage, archaeological site, Heritage Urban Landscape (HUL) in a multi-temporal and multi-scale fluid environment, to share and explore common needs and new approaches, as well as challenging issues.
They include demanding of technologies able to deal with the complexity and unicity of the cultural heritage, including surveying methods, data processing, and modelling tools to gain and transfer reliable interpretations: the technical proposed solutions have to consider to offer the needed level of accuracy with the more economical and practical solutions, time and cost effectiveness.
Heritage Informative Models need innovative generative modelling tools to embody the complexity overcoming the BIM limits born for new constructions, where accuracy can play an important knowledge occasion.
Informative Models and Systems, including Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS/WEBGIS), together with applications based on virtual hubs, represent a powerful innovative virtual place where to join 4D GEO- DB Models of the Architectural Heritage and its elements (i.e. walls, vaulted systems, trusses) till to the Heritage Urban Landscape (HUL).
Semantics and vocabularies can play an important role in the spatial-time co-relation of information richness: historical data, materials, stratigraphic units, construction techniques, arrangements, history of the ancient skilled workers, art-crafts, DBs, multi-temporal maps and documents from archives and collections, Open Data.
Such informative models and systems - generally born within professional frameworks - are mainly destined to be left in the digital drawers after the research analysis and conservation phases. They need be used as a ‘live’ data source to enrich content based information. They can contribute feeding Virtual Museums in the different forms with an extraordinary richness of contents circulated by the models to non-professional experts with the support of the eXtended Reality: an extraordinary opportunity to awareness rising among citizens toward an informed society supported by enriched storytelling. The usage of eXtended Reality (XR), comprehensive of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and video game technologies for explaining CH to wider audiences can find its place in this challenging field of action. HBIM nodes needs to be related one to each other by means of semantic based virtual hub platforms capable to connect their content crossing models and information through time and space, to discover and access their contents within a holistic approach.
