Dal 27-29 novembre, i rappresentanti degli stati provenienti da tutte le regioni del mondo si incontreranno presso la sede della FAO a Roma per l'Assemblea Generale ICCROM (The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), organizzazione intergovernativa che si occupa dello studio della conservazione del patrimonio culturale in tutto il mondo.
Le delegazioni presenti all'Assemblea Generale comprenderanno diplomatici e rappresentanti delle istituzioni governative. “L'Assemblea Generale ICCROM è molto più di un incontro formale: è il luogo in cui decisori e operatori possono condividere esprimere pareri su come affrontare le più rilevanti problematiche riguardanti il patrimonio culturale nel nostro tempo”, ha dichiarato Stefano De Caro, Direttore Generale dell’ICCROM, già Direttore Generale delle Antichità presso il Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali italiano.
L'Assemblea Generale costituisce una piattaforma privilegiata per condividere preoccupazioni in merito a questioni di conservazione del patrimonio culturale e per incontrare i rappresentanti e colleghi provenienti da tutte le aree del globo. I delegati dei Paesi saranno, inoltre, chiamati a votare i programmi di attività dell'organizzazione per il prossimo biennio 2014-2015, contribuendo, quindi, attivamente ai suoi scopi.
Il patrimonio culturale diventa sempre più vulnerabile e gli episodi di degrado di siti e di musei per cause naturali o umane sono sempre più frequenti. Allo stesso tempo molta attenzione, anche mediatica, è rivolta a questa risorsa in termini di testimone delle identità e di contributo allo sviluppo globale. L’ICCROM, una piccola organizzazione ospite del territorio italiano che risponde ai 133 Stati membri, si pone come centro di eccellenza per lo sviluppo di capacità operative e professionali nella conservazione del patrimonio culturale contribuendo, altresì, alla stabilità e allo sviluppo ambientale e socio-economico.
Nel biennio 2012-2013, più di 100 paesi hanno beneficiato di servizi dell’ICCROM attraverso attività di capacity-building e seminari. Tra i temi affrontati, la tutela del patrimonio nelle aree di conflitto nella regione araba, la conservazione di materiale audiovisivo attraverso tecnologie avanzate e applicazioni per smart-phone, e un Forum sulla scienza della conservazione che ha riunito istituzioni specializzate ed illustri scienziati del campo per discutere la relazione tra conservazione e priorità di sviluppo.
Fondata nel 1956 dall’UNESCO, l’ICCROM è l'unica organizzazione intergovernativa dedicata specificamente allo studio di temi sulla protezione e conservazione del patrimonio culturale in tutto il mondo, monumenti e siti, oltre a musei, biblioteche e collezioni d'archivio. L’ICCROM compie la sua missione attraverso attività di raccolta e diffusione delle informazioni, di coordinamento della ricerca, di consulenza, di formazione avanzata, e infine di sensibilizzazione riguardo il valore della tutela del patrimonio culturale.

133 Countries to Convene in Rome to Discuss the Conservation of Cultural Heritage Worldwide
From 27-29 November, representatives of governments from all regions of the world will meet at the FAO headquarters in Rome for the General Assembly of ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), the intergovernmental organization dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage worldwide.
Delegations present at the three-day General Assembly will include diplomats and representatives from top-level institutions and ministries, both Italian and from abroad. “The ICCROM General Assembly is much more than the formal, ritual gathering of an intergovernmental organization. It is the place where decision-makers and professionals can share informed opinions on how to deal with the most relevant worldwide issues concerning heritage in our time”, stated Stefano De Caro, ICCROM Director-General and former Director-General of Antiquities with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC). The General Assembly will serve in fact as a platform for Member States to voice their concerns regarding conservation issues and meet with representatives and peers from all areas of the globe. These countries will vote on the future programmes of the organization, and therefore help determine the trajectory of ICCROM as a source of information and capacity for promoting best practice in conservation.
As cultural heritage becomes increasingly vulnerable to global pressures, examples of the destruction of sites and museums by natural or human forces have become all too familiar. Much more attention must be given to the potential this resource has in healing communities and contributing to global development and empowerment. ICCROM, a small Rome-based organization that answers to 133 Member States, has positioned itself as a centre of excellence for the training of professionals in heritage conservation. The overall goal is to contribute to social stability, and environmental and socioeconomic development through culture.
In the 2012-2013 biennium, over 100 countries benefited from ICCROM’s services through training and think tank activities alone. These included workshops for the protection of heritage in conflict areas in the Arab region, a ground-breaking course in Kenya that merged the preservation of sound and images with smart phone technologies, and a conference that brought together the field’s most prestigious scientists to discuss how to connect conservation to wider social priorities.
Established in 1956 by UNESCO, ICCROM is the only institution of its kind dedicated to the protection and preservation of cultural heritage worldwide, including monuments and sites, as well as museum, library and archive collections. ICCROM fulfils its mission through collecting and disseminating information; coordinating research; offering consultancy and advice; providing advanced training; and promoting awareness of the value of preserving cultural heritage.
