Abstract
In this work, the results of the analyses carried out on several types of old photographic materials, both negatives and positives, belonging to different collections and institutions are presented.
The main analytical techniques and methods necessary for a complete study of old photographic materials are reviewed and, when possible, the attention is focused on using non-destructive spectroscopic and imaging techniques.
New methods for the chemical and structural characterization of three common silver printing-out processes in the early decades of history of photography were experimented: salted papers, albumen prints and aristotypes.
Obtained results encourage to continue this experimentation increasing the number of old photographic processes analyzed.
