In Archeofoss 2020, Gabriele Ciccone showed how to use open source tools to elaborate thermal images and create archaeological 3S surveys and orthophotos (abstract in https://zenodo.org/record/4002961#.YHgzlOgzaUk), as part of his Phd project “Flying off-site: nuove metodologie di indagine per l’analisi dei paesaggi storici”.
The use of the UAV in archaeology will be the future, as they show great potential in producing new archaeological results, starting with thermal images. The first step of Cissione’s work was to develop a workflow that allowed elaboration of different images at various times of the day, using different kinds of software (proprietary software or FLOS software). This work was a perfect way to define the best conditions to capture images, and at the same time, test the different software and their potential.
Beyond this workflow, the next objective was to find the best open source software that can replace the proprietary software used on specific steps of the workflow.
The final aim of the project is to create a chain of FLOS software able to produce a series of useful maps for archaeological purposes: from the simple 3d survey to the orthophotogrammetric reconstruction of a building or of the archaeological landscape.
