To celebrate its foundation 30 years ago the conservation study program of the HAWK in Hildesheim is organizing an international symposium on "Consolidation and Communication" in January 2018: Consolidation is a central task of conservation, namely to safeguard the aged, weakened material structures by appropriate means and methods.

The symposium aims to promote an exchange between the different disciplines of conservation:  As a way of inspiring new solutions, current research results based on innovative methods should be presented and discussed in view of their transferability to other kinds of cultural heritage objects.o celebrate its foundation 30 years ago the conservation study program of the HAWK in Hildesheim is organizing an international symposium on "Consolidation and Communication" in January 2018: Consolidation is a central task of conservation, namely to safeguard the aged, weakened material structures by appropriate means and methods.

Presentations related to the following range of topics are requested:

- Criteria for choosing suitable consolidants (e.g. their qualities, penetration behavior, and bonding capacity)
- Influences of application methods on the conservation result and the further development of these methods

- Determining the necessary degree of consolidation, assessing the long-term success of the conservation and its verification
- Special solutions (innovative, technical or material), also those derived from other scientific disciplines

Christian Eckmann and Katja Broschat from "Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz" will present the reattachment of the ceremonial beard of King Tutankhamen's funerary mask in a public evening lecture on Thursday, 25 January. In August 2014, the beard became loose during maintenance work and was hastily glued back in an inappropriate manner. The lecture focuses on the reattachment of the ceremonial beard as well as the current studies regarding the manufacture of the mask and the materials employed. It also includes a brief history of the mask since its discovery and former restoration measures. An account of how the project was structured, the preparation- and precaution measures implemented as well as the scientific analyses conducted, will also be introduced.

The conference languages are German and English. Team-authored presentations made up of specialists from different fields are desirable but not required. In advance of the symposium, abstracts of the selected papers and posters will be made available on the website of the Hornemann Institute of the HAWK.Registration will be enabled here in August. The capacity of the conference room is limited. We have only two English presentations (see Agenda). A simultaneous translation is unfortunately not possible due to the costs. But we will have some English-speaking guests and so we will place them next to colleagues who will try to translate the most important arguments of the paper presentations for them as good as possible. We hope for your understanding.
